<p>Impressions from my sister in law.<br />
Memories of 1978.</p>
<p>#farmergetsawife<br />
Agriculturalists gets a wife<br />
City bride new to the country<br />
City spouse new to the country<br />
City girl marries her farmer<br />
City miss weds her rancher</p>
<p>All of the above are depending on from where you live in this world.<br />
Different expressions&#8230;.same meaning</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>I married my beloved farmer or rancher as the Americans say. A young lady who lived nowhere near the country but by the sea. Near Semaphore in Adelaide, South Australia.</p>
<p>We had a four day honeymoon on Kangaroo Island, a remotish tourist destination where the only access was via a two hour ferry trip down the Port River and over the ocean. Being a roll on roll off ferry we were able to take our car to explore this rugged place.</p>
<p>On our return and in light of the fact that this boat berths unpleasantly early we sat in our car outside of my parents home waiting for them to wake up. Waiting for the household to show signs of stirring.</p>
<p>I was particularly looking forwards to seeing my mother; and which girl doesn&#8217;t!</p>
<p>Knowing likewise that I would not be seeing her again for quite a while to come.<br />
A new country wife living a few hours away where distances are measure by time depending on the roads.</p>
<p>Well all this came to nought. No happy catch up time. No time for chit chat.</em></p>
<div id="attachment_2339" style="width: 2058px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/image2.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-2339" src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/image2.jpg" alt="#farmergetsawife, country living, country isolation, homesteading, memories of 1978" width="2048" height="1536" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Country life line</p></div>
<p><em>Rather, a call had been received from my parents in law asking that we return to the farm property immediately for my husband to help with the grain cleaning. In those days you needed to wait having made a booking for a man to go to your property or ranch on a set day to do this job &#8230;well that time slot had come early!</p>
<p>So with my heart heavy we headed to my new life with dear husband who didn&#8217;t even have any work clothes with him. Fortunately there were some extra garments sitting at the main farm for him. Work boots, jeans or shorts, flannel shirt or T-shirt and the ever present hat of sorts.</p>
<p>As for me, after dropping my man off I proceeded down the white unsealed road with scrubby bush on either side, trusting that I would wind up at my new home, an old stone cottage with resident snake!</p>
<p>All roads here have a striking resemblance with each other to the uninitiated city folk&#8230;.directions can go like this- go two Kms , then turn right and go another two Kms. At the telegraph pole turn right over the sheep grid and follow the road to the house. I must say it&#8217;s far easier to do in the day.</p>
<p>There was no new bride to be carried over the threshold. I ventured into our stone cottage myself.</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/image1.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2338" src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/image1.jpg" alt="#farmergetsawife, country living, country isolation, homesteading, memories of 1978, country life, country wife, rural living" width="2048" height="1536" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/image.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2337" src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/image.jpg" alt="of 1978, country life, country wife, rural living, old homestead , stone cottage" width="2048" height="1536" /></a></p>
<p><em>But I love our life here. Over the years we&#8217;ve lived in a few different houses. First was that stone cottage.</p>
<p>Now our son runs the farm with hubby working for him. New ways, new methods, new ideas, new generation, new energy, new grandsons.</p>
<p>Cycles of family life.</em></p>
<p>Alexa back here again.<br />
Our cycles of life<br />
The years roll by<br />
Silently but ever moving</p>
<div id="attachment_2207" style="width: 2058px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/image14.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/image14.jpg" alt="of 1978, country life, country wife, rural living, old homestead , stone cottage, visiting a farm with children" width="2048" height="1536" class="size-full wp-image-2207" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Our family visiting the Farm</p></div>
<p>Now I must search out that pastie recipe from an old school book when we did Home Economics at High School. My sister in law bakes an awesome one.<br />
Best eaten on a cold day which is the opposite to what we have here presently in Australia. Summer heat waves. Yet I guess you could eat it with a salad.<br />
I think I will wait though so that the oven does not over heat the already warm house.</p>
<p>What a pity I did not keep my copy when I culled all my books during our recent move. The modern copy is rather pricey now.<br />
Live and learn.</p>
<p><a title="Recipe of Pastie" href="http://cdn-media.macmillan.com.au/mea/promotions/CookeryTheAustralianWay_BROCHURE_2013.pdf">Recipe of pasty&#8230;</a>&#8230;.<br />
Page 7 of 8<br />
&#8220;Cookery the Australian Way&#8221; 50 some years old and still serving and teaching our young.</p>
<p>Memories are the threads of life<br />
A tapestry in the making</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/image.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/image.jpg" alt="Alexa-asimplelife" width="162" height="103" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2116" /></a></p>

<p>This is a Post-it note<br />
Notebook<br />
Diary to myself<br />
To remember</p>
<p>Old-timer<br />
Waiting patiently for a new outfit<br />
Having been so very patient<br />
Hoping to be smartened up</p>
<p>Forgotten<br />
Neglected<br />
Once so bright and fresh&#8230;<br />
A garden bed<br />
Waiting<br />
Waiting a year?</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image7.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image7.jpg" alt="Do you keep a diary, family time, grandparents and family time, happy, Memories, Post-it note, Post-it note to remember, sense of adventure, support network, team work, Renovating, hedging, garden hedge, garden tools, garden hedge for privacy" width="2592" height="1936" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1796" /></a></p>
<p>Old drainage removed from two sides of garden<br />
Thanks Liam and friend for wielding the pick<br />
Now there is a growing pile of cement </p>
<p>Hedging for one side purchased at short notice on a very hot day<br />
Brought home squashed into two cars<br />
Then a family day of visitors<br />
Hard slog of hedge planting wielding pick and spade in the summer heat started by Rachel whilst extended family visits</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image8.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image8.jpg" alt="Do you keep a diary, family time, grandparents and family time, happy, Memories, Post-it note, Post-it note to remember, sense of adventure, support network, team work, Renovating, hedging, garden hedge, garden hedge for privacy" width="2592" height="1936" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1797" /></a></p>

<p>Little boys playing happily<br />
Exploring the garage thinking no one is watching<br />
Heaven!<br />
Pulling out everything they think can be played with&#8230;for two minutes <img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" class="wp-smiley" /> </p>
<p>Must not forget the ice blocks and ice creams savoured that night outside in the cool of the evening.<br />
Watching the free and hilarious antics of the little ones sitting in their little chairs on the grass. Listening to their chatter. Ice block juice dripping and running down bare little arms&#8230;no problem&#8230;.just splash the arms in the paddling pool close by. </p>
<p>Hedging continued by brother-in-law Derek another morning </p>
<p>I must remember to buy an axe to remove chunky old tree root where one hedging plant needs to go<br />
Plants and ground slowly deep watered by soaker hose again</p>
<div id="attachment_1799" style="width: 2602px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image11.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image11.jpg" alt="Do you keep a diary, family time, grandparents and family time, happy, Memories, Post-it note, Post-it note to remember, sense of adventure, support network, team work, Renovating, hedging, garden hedge, garden hedge for privacy, children playing, re-purposed toys, soaking rain , deep watering, " width="2592" height="1936" class="size-full wp-image-1799" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Rain some days later gave the best soaking start</p></div>

<p>Thank you Rachel for sanding the bathroom door as it rested on a saw horse. A new experience for you with a power orbital sander with instructions by your hubby dear<br />
Bathroom door has two coats of paint&#8230;hip hooray&#8230;it only took a year <img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" class="wp-smiley" /><br />
Thanks Steve for your help<br />
Side gates nearly all painted. One more coat on the bigger gate and meter box and it&#8217;s all done<br />
Straggling uneven plants removed on driveway boundary side<br />
&#8230;now all streamlined</p>
<p>Getting there<br />
Now the endless job list seems do-able because we can see results<br />
A goal in sight<br />
One step at a time</p>
<p>Thanks to the team effort of young and older</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image10.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/image10.jpg" alt="Do you keep a diary, family time, grandparents and family time, happy, Memories, Post-it note, Post-it note to remember, sense of adventure, support network, team work, Renovating, hedging, garden hedge, garden hedge for privacy, children playing, re-purposed toys, soaking rain , deep watering, raindrops, new growth" width="2592" height="1936" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1798" /></a></p>
<p>A lesson to remember for our Life&#8217;s journey.<br />
Side by side.<br />
Full of vibrant energy<br />
Or the remembered strength of youth</p>

<p>Last night just thinking of myself and craving a snack I found a recipe for Chocolate Chia pudding. </p>
<p>I pottered about in a hum drum sort of way and put the prepared healthy pudding in the fridge to soak ready for the next morning.</p>
<p>Morning arrives and with much anticipation I prepare to be delighted by a delicious sustaining meal&#8230;..</p>
<p>Oh dear. I discovered that I had used Quinoa instead of Chia. Ahhhhh!<br />
Not to be deterred I strained out the Quinoa and added chia seed and returned it to the fridge to do its soak.<br />
The Quinoa will be experimented with another day.<br />
And yes <a href="http://ifoodreal.com/chocolate-chia-pudding-recipe/#comment-422090" target="_blank">my pudding </a>did turn out. Cold, thick and refreshing on a hot day.</p>
<p>In between it seemed we lived in a different world, a parallel universe.</p>
<div id="attachment_1712" style="width: 3010px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/image.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/image.jpg" alt="Chocolate chia pudding and then horror, chocolate chia pudding recipe, family, home made, Lindt Cafe, Martin Place siege , Quinoa, support network, Australia, chia recipes " width="3000" height="2250" class="size-full wp-image-1712" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">By pippalou @morgueFile free photos. <p>As the stars in our vast wide country heavens so brilliantly pulsated last night, and most of Australia slept, a scene of unimagined horror climaxed and exploded in the madness of the Martin Place siege. </p>
<p>In a Lindt Cafe. </p>
<p>A happy place, a refuge and a meeting point on an ordinary Sydney day.</p>
<p>For ordinary people starting their day. </p>
<p>Instead, horror and the resultant aftermath. </p>
<p>A day to be forever remembered. </p>
<p>Lives forever changed.</p>
<p>In my life, thankful for our safe families sleeping in their own beds free from danger. By God&#8217;s grace.</p>
<p>For support network of friends when in times of need after the event. </p>

<p>In the 1950&#8242;s Australia was billed as a Land of Milk and Honey to migrants. A land of untapped wealth and needing workers. So they came, to help build the infrastructure and to discover. In a way they were pioneers with sight, prepared to make a better life, learn and work hard in a strange land. They were from all walks of life and prepared to take any work. </p>

<p>Look at a few of these examples. Migrant City folk who had to learn about the land, agriculture, livestock, farming, animal husbandry. Or farming folk, homesteaders in their own country having to adapt to an extremely different climate. Australia being a land of flood AND drought. A vast land. Then the labourers, brick layers, hardy men on their own hoping to bring family to this new country and working hard to save.</p>

<p>We were privileged because our family was befriended by kind and generous Australians who taught my parents about the new country. My mother was a city girl and my father knew or had learnt tool making. Both longed for a new safe place to call home, raise a family and were prepared to work for it. So thanks to the family of Mr Malthouse a hard working farmer near Bradbury, South Australia our family started their life in a new country. I feel sad though because as happens in life we lost contact, and this is my mother&#8217;s constant regret in her age where she has time to reflect.</p>

<p>I was a child in a strange land and it was only later as adults did we truly realise the blessings we had and have around us. The abundance, even when making do. We knew no different. There was freedom of space to discover and learn.</p>
<div id="attachment_1611" style="width: 2464px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/image14.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/image14.jpg" alt="Memories and a walk in the rain, migrants to Australia, migrants, pioneers, discovering Australia , grandchildren, make time, work hard, memories, outdoors, sense of Adventure, support network, thankful, thankfulness, thanking our forefathers, work ethics, rainbow, children in a strange land, animal husbandry, cow with newborn calf, morgueFile free photos, , Dars Hill, I love a sunburnt country a land of sweeping plains, cutting hay, reaping hay, raking hay by hand, Pinterest , city girl turned farmer, walking with children, nature walk with children , exploring Forest " width="2454" height="3360" class="size-full wp-image-1611" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Courtesy stweedlie@morgueFile free photos</p></div>
<p>We also learnt that if it rained and we missed the bus to school we had to walk in the rain. There was no car! Instead, with raincoats and gum boots on we set off remembering to beware one particular bend on that narrow road near a Beech Forest in Stirling. A dip in the road where a monstrously long puddle formed next to the footpath. You see we had to strategically plan this stretch because if we didn&#8217;t take it at a run from one end to the next we were bound to get drenched. I know I got soaked at least once when I didn&#8217;t see a truck approaching the bends. A snaking road past ancient, dark and looming trees on a huge property. Huge and menacing to a child and it hasn&#8217;t really changed much now.</p>
<div id="attachment_1610" style="width: 1238px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/image13.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/image13.jpg" alt="Memories and a walk in the rain, discovering nature, , migrants to Australia, migrants, pioneers, discovering Australia , grandchildren, make time, work hard, memories, outdoors, sense of Adventure, support network, thankful, thankfulness, thanking our forefathers, work ethics, rainbow, children in a strange land, animal husbandry, cow with newborn calf, morgueFile free photos, , Dars Hill, I love a sunburnt country a land of sweeping plains, cutting hay, reaping hay, raking hay by hand, Pinterest , city girl turned farmer, walking with children, nature walk with children " width="1228" height="1818" class="size-full wp-image-1610" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Courtesy gracey@ morgueFile free photos</p></div>
<p>So now a few generations on as my little grandson and I take a walk&#8230;</p>
<p>I have learnt how to go walking with toddlers<br />
I have learnt how a grandmother can alleviate cabin fever<br />
I have discovered exercise can be fun</p>
<p>&#8230;to be continued in Part 2</p>

<p>Today I have just a few little lines on &#8220;to remember&#8221;</p>
<p>From Webster Dictionary<br />
re·mem·ber verb<br />
: to cause (something) to come back into your mind<br />
: to keep (information) in your mind : to not forget (something)</p>
<p>Today I remember<br />
Those who would love to feel the dew on the grass again<br />
To walk on their own into the fresh air<br />
To go outside and feel the air brush the face<br />
&#8230;whenever they want<br />
To look at the sky but not through a window<br />
To sit by the ocean but not just dream the murmur of the waves<br />
&#8230;whenever they want</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/image10.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/image10.jpg" alt="Remember, cancer, peace, help and support for cancer, family support, women and cancer, Flinders Medical Centre" width="2048" height="1536" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1360" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/image11.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/image11.jpg" alt="Remember, cancer, peace, help and support for cancer, family support, women and cancer, Flinders Medical Centre, fresh air, beauty of the vast skies, peppercorn tree, heritage chimney stacks" width="2048" height="1536" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1361" /></a></p>
<p>Remember them, whoever they may be.<br />
You may know them or of them.<br />
Remember them and be thankful that you maybe can<br />
Whenever you want<br />
Feel the dew on the grass<br />
Walk in the fresh air<br />
Look up at the sky<br />
Sit by the ocean </p>
<p>May they be surrounded by love, find inner strength and peace.</p>

<p>Mum</p>
<p>Thought you&#8217;d like this time lapse video of the plant called the Rose of Jericho. With water it goes from a dried up tumbleweed to a beautiful fern over a couple of hours. I watched it and was thinking that people are the same. They can appear dried up and withered and hopeless, when all they need to get smiling and happy is some love and attention <img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=":-)" class="wp-smiley" /> </p>

<p>Finding Joy&#8230;<br />
I wrote this a week ago during a drive to visit family. A moment when thoughts just flowed. Since then there have been tragic news stories abounding which makes us want to hold loved ones closer.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8230;It has been an emotional few weeks visiting, supporting and driving from one end of an out-of-state town to the other. Showing our love, compassion, cheer and empathy to two dearly beloved family members of two different generations. One ageing being cared for in assisted living and the other too young, with a short life expectancy but fighting valiantly to continue.</p>
<p>Many emotions and memories for all.</p>
<p>Today we decided to drive a different route home after morning coffee with family. We&#8217;d been refreshed with our eyes exploring the wide horizons of the beautiful Adelaide Hills. A change from city driving. From little car parks and trying to find another parking spot, again, today. From hospital car parks. From the stale confined air of hospitals.</p>
<div id="attachment_1239" style="width: 3082px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/image2.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/image2.jpg" alt="Joy in unexpected places, family, finding joy, finding peace, finding support, how to cope with family trauma, joy, Respite, soothe the soul, support for the terminally ill, support network, green hills, wide horizons, surviving hard times, resilient" width="3072" height="2048" class="size-full wp-image-1239" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Courtesy Kconnors@morgueFile free photos</p></div>
<p>&#8230;so we took another road not quite knowing what the journey would be like. We had time and were in the mindset to try &#8220;different&#8221; and I&#8217;m so glad we did. It was just a road, a straight unimpeded road with less bustling traffic and for most of the way it exuded tranquility&#8230;.older stately houses, graceful homes, bigger blocks, greenery&#8230;.it was my meditation</p>
<p>Sights which I would have loved to photograph.<br />
Instead&#8230;<br />
Snaps I took with my mind of quickly passing scenes<br />
A quaint cupola roof peeking out amongst the green<br />
Gorgeous stone and metal lace work from old religious college<br />
Sprawling slate roof on stately lady of a house with vibrant green moss growing amongst the tiles<br />
&#8216;Bespoke&#8217; luxury apartment with advertising sign for sale&#8230;Oh, what a gorgeous old worldly word<br />
Watching a young father with small son on his shoulders walking to the nearest place to play ball<br />
&#8230;each carrying their own basket ball<br />
&#8230;regular size and child size<br />
&#8230;and that REALLY made me smile</p>
<div id="attachment_1240" style="width: 4618px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/image3.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/image3.jpg" alt="Joy in unexpected places, family, finding joy, finding peace, finding support, how to cope with family trauma, joy, Respite, soothe the soul, support for the terminally ill, support network, surviving hard times, resilient, basket ball, playing ball with children, forget me not" width="4608" height="3072" class="size-full wp-image-1240" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Courtesy Jeltovski@morgueFile free photos</p></div>
<p>So I found a beautiful place to linger in and was refreshed. </p>
<p>Do YOU find these places?<br />
&#8230;by observing with a different eye.<br />
&#8230;A little beauty and joy on an unfamiliar road. </p>
<p>Another little detour later in the day&#8230;<br />
Taking the long way round to go visiting &#8230;<br />
Food for the soul-<br />
A drive along the ocean.<br />
Serenity</p>
<div id="attachment_1235" style="width: 2308px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/image.jpg"><img src="http://www.alexa-asimplelife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/image.jpg" alt="Joy in unexpected places, family, finding joy, finding peace, finding support, how to cope with family trauma, joy, Respite, soothe the soul, support for the terminally ill, support network, sunset, serenity in a sunset" width="2298" height="1536" class="size-full wp-image-1235" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Courtesy demondimum@morgueFile free photos</p></div>
<p>Orange skies, luminous clouds outlined with gold<br />
Brightest of beams displayed surrounding an even brighter sun<br />
A heavy ball is the sun, drooping and dropping into the ocean<br />
And gone&#8230;<br />
But so many Joy filled hearts<br />
Sitting in parked cars or lined up with cameras,<br />
Silhouette of family standing on sand dunes<br />
Even paused mid stride it seemed,<br />
on the footpath with shopping in hand.<br />
All savouring a brief magic moment</p>
<p>Do you savour the moment? &#8221;<br />
For B.</p>
